Air India is the national carrier of India. It is wholly owned and controlled by the government of India. It was initially founded by JRD Tata in 1932 as Tata airlines. It is among the largest Asian airlines, serving 25 destinations worldwide. It has agreements over code sharing with many other key international fliers, taking its number of destinations to over 100. Air India airline was born due to the Indian government’s initiative to nationalize air travel. Its main hub is the IGI airport in New Delhi. It has a huge presence in the Indian market. Air India aircrafts are used by the important political figures of India like the president and PM for official purposes.
In the year 2010, Air India will become a member of Star Alliance- the world’s airlines alliance in the world. With a seat factor of more than 60%, air India’s revenues surpass $1billion. It operates entirely on airbuses, earning it the award of the world’s largest operator of airbuses. It is well known for its “maharaja” services and has an entire maharaja lounge for its business and executive class fliers. In 2007, it was merged with Indian airlines.
Air India provides regular and direct flights to Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Goa and many other domestic cities in India and many flights to abroad in different country.
